Michael Carrick reveals how Cesc Fabregas prevented him from joining Arsenal

Michael Carrick has revealed that he was a matter of days away from joining Arsenal until Cesc Fabregas broke onto the scene and caused the move to collapse.
The former England international, now assistant to Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, was inundated with offers back in 2004, with West Ham ? then in the Championship ? in need of the money.
When Arsenal made contact, Carrick jumped at the chance to meet Arsene Wenger and looked certain to join, with David Dein even negotiating a fee.

The deal was due to be completed on a Monday, but the day before Arsenal took on Manchester United in the Community Shield and Fabregas impressed so much Wenger pulled the plug on the deal to sign Carrick. In an extract from his new autobiography, Carrick wrote: ?On the way home, we got another call. Arsenal again, asking us to meet Arsene. As it happened we were driving past his home in north London, so we arranged to call in on the way.
