Second place is still good for Pot 1 ? this time. Bayern Munich will not be hit hard for losing the Bundesliga for the first time in the last 12 seasons, thanks to a timely update of the format that will keep the Bavarians in Pot 1, owing to its recent success in the competition.
As explained by a Sky Sport from mid-April, captured via @iMiaSanMia:
Bayern will still be in Pot 1 of next season?s Champions League draw despite not winning the league title. With the new format starting next season, league winners no longer get automatic spots in Pot 1. The spots will be distributed according to the coefficient rankings of the clubs (Bayern currently 2nd) [via @SkySportDE] You never know with those Champions League draws, however. Pot 1 does not always spare a team from a Group of Death ? though the last time this happened to Bayern, the Bavarians navigated the group stage soundly, roundly beating FC Barcelona and Inter Milan under former coach Julian Nagelsmann.
New coach, new format, but same old Bayern" Expect the German giants to continue romping through to the latter stages of the tournament in the years to come.
