Doesn?t look like Schmidt ball will be coming to Munich any time soon. Bayern Munich has had quite some difficulty finding the right coach to replace the outgoing Thomas Tuchel.
Xabi Alonso and Sebastian Hoeness, who looked like ideal targets when it was announced that Tuchel would be leaving in the summer, have both opted to stay put with Bayer Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart respectively.
Many fans had hoped Julian Nagelsmann might return to Munich, be he too signed a contract extension and is set to be the Germany head coach for the 2026 World Cup.
In more positive news, recent reports suggest that Uli Hoeness and Hansi Flick have repaired their relationship, meaning that Flick's return is a very real possibility. But with the number of twists and turns the race to find a Tuchel?s successor has taken already it?s important that Bayern explores all of its options and has backup plans ready. One name that has been thrown around recently is that of SL Benfica head coach Roger Schmidt. When asked about the links to Bayern, Schmidt (via @iMiaSanMia) had the following to say:
For me it?s a great pride to be the coach of Benfica. I knew exactly what I was doing when I signed a new contract with Benfica. If you look at my career, when I make a decision for a club, I make a decision. I don?t make a different decision few months later
