Confirmed: Lars Ricken is Chosen as Hans-Joachim Watzke?s Successor

After rumors of everyone but Lars Ricken, the hometown hero is chosen to oversee the club?s sporting ambitions. In the wee hours of April 22, 2024, white smoke plumes from the chimney of the Westfalenstadion - a new CEO for Sport at Borussia Dortmund has been chosen; Lars Ricken! Earlier this year, Dortmund?s CEO of both Sport and Business, Hans-Joachim Watzke, announced that he planned to step away from the club in 2025. His departure will mark the end of a 24-year long cooperation between Watzke and Borussia Dortmund where he served as CEO for almost 20 years.
Watzke?s departure is also paving the way for a complete restructuring of Dortmund?s C-suite. With the economic hardships of the past far in the rearview mirror, the need to have the CEO of the club?s financial wellbeing and the club?s sporting ambitions be managed the same person is no longer present. It was announced that a new role, creatively named ?CEO of Sports?, will be created and the successor handpicked to work as Watzke?s replacement. This new role oversees the club?s sporting ventures and will have final say on all sporting matters including coaching hires and player transfers. Rumors circulated of Sebastian Kehl, Sven Mislintat, Mathias Sammer, or an outside candidate being given the role the Sporting CEO.
