Clarets close in on cup semi-final
A 3-1 win against Accrington this afternoon at Gawthorpe has left us needing just one point from our final group game against Wrexham to go through to the semi-finals of this season?s Central League Cup.
We kicked off the game today level on points with Accrington ahead of us on goals scored with both of us having won our first games but this win now takes us two points clear and a goal difference that is four better than Accrington?s.
Midfielder Tommy McDermott, scored our first two goals. He opened the scoring in the first half, turning in a Brad Grant cross from close range and added his second soon after the half time break with a shot into the bottom corner.
Accrington pulled one back just past the hour with an Anjola Popoola header but Tom Tweedy (pictured), who came on as a substitute, added our third close to the end when he picked up a loose ball in the box to prod home. We have a four week wait before the Wrexham game which is still waiting to have its venue confirmed. A point from that game will ensure we win the group and move into the last four.
