Goalscoring return for Tioffo
Burnley?s under-18s beat Cardiff City 3-1 at Gawthorpe last Saturday. Our first goal was scored by under-16 Fabio So, his first at this level, and the second was a penalty taken by Benji Wetshi.
The third came close to the end, from another penalty which was scored by Ryan Tioffo who had come on as a substitute with twenty minutes to go in the game. Now aged eighteen and in the second year of his scholarship, his previous goal had come in October 2022 against Birmingham and he was a player who had all but disappeared having not played in some considerable time.
This game last Saturday was his long awaited return after almost a year out with an injury that was close to ending his career.
Speaking after the game, his coach Tony Philliskirk said: ?At the start of this season there was a very, very good chance that Ryan Tioffo may never play again. He had an injury that, even the specialists were scratching their heads. He had enormous bone growth in his hamstring. It had never been seen before. It?s a true test of the mentality of the player and the expertise of our medical staff that?s got the lad back today. There?s certain things that are more important than playing football and today was seeing Ryan Tioffo crossing that white line.? The win ensured we stayed four in the north group of the U18 Professional Development League but with just three games remaining, we are not going to go on and win it. The title has already been secured by Birmingham. They beat south group lead...
