Heavy defeat on a difficult afternoon for the under-21s
The under-21s fell to a 4-0 defeat this afternoon at Leyland against Barnsley but it was a much changed team to the one seen in the previous two games.
None of the outfield players who started against Stockport two days ago were involved with just goalkeeper Charlie Casper retaining his place. In front of him were a mixture of players including some from the under-18 squad and two trialists.
After a quiet opening, it was Barnsley, with former Burnley scholar Nathan James in their team, who went in front from the penalty spot after a foul by the trialist at right-back midway through the half. Josiah Dyer scored the spot kick and they added a second six minutes before the break when a trialist of their own headed home.
That gave Barnsley a 2-0 half time lead and the same two players were on the scoresheet again in the second half. The trialist scored within thirty seconds of the restart with Dyer netting his second with just five minutes remaining. The teams were;
