Masara goal takes Clarets into final
Burnley have reached the final of the Lancashire Senior Cup for the fourth time in the last five seasons after beating Accrington Stanley 1-0 at the Crown Ground this week.
The only goal of the game in a generally scrappy encounter came eight minutes into the second half when Tom Tweedy played in Vernon Masara whose shot went straight through the goalkeeper and was the 16-year-old?s first goal for the club at this level.
The first half of the game was scrappy for long parts but in the final ten minutes or so we began to get on top and had a couple of decent chances with Logan Pye shooting wide and then Joe Bevan firing over with the final kick of the half when he looked a certain scorer.
It started more brightly in the second half with Tweedy getting the first chance but firing straight at the goalkeeper but two minutes later he set up Masara for what proved to be the winner. Accrington responded but for much of the second half we looked comfortable enough but as the game moved into its final stage, so Accrington started to play balls into our box. We didn?t falter and defended well with Charlie Casper rarely called upon.
Five minutes of stoppage time were added but we saw it through to reach the final and another date with Barrow.
The teams were;
Accrington: Toby Savin, Oliver Patrick, Seb Quirk, Josh Smith, Aaron Pickles, Finlay Tunstall, Lewis Trickett, Charlie Hall, Anjola Popoola, Jack Massey, Emerich Poilly. Subs: James Rogerson, Bradley Kelly, Rio Alston, Jake Young,...
