Top two drop points in under-21 league
Only a limited number of games have been played in the Professional Development League in the past few weeks from one played on 22nd January up to and including one played yesterday afternoon.
Eleven have been played in each of the north and south groups and that includes two Burnley games, one that ended in a 2-1 win against league leaders Birmingham and more recently the 2-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday two days ago.
A number of games have been hit by the weather which has brought substantial postponements but as we go into the next set of fixtures, Birmingham still hold the lead in the north group ahead of Sheffield United. Both have dropped points in the last couple of days. Sheffield United were surprisingly beaten by Barnsley on Tuesday afternoon but Birmingham were unable to take much advantage when they were held by Fleetwood yesterday afternoon. Birmingham?s lead at the top is now five points but Sheffield United do have three games in hand. Sheffield Wednesday, Barnsley and Fleetwood currently hold the next three positions followed by us but our under-21s are now seven points behind Fleetwood although it must be noted that we have plenty of games in hand on all of those above us and those immediately behind us. As unlikely as it might be, if we did win all of our games in hand over Birmingham, we would be ahead of them in the table.
In truth, a battle between Birmingham and Sheffield United looks the most likely but in the south group there are now four teams at ...
