Rio Ferdinand has explained why Chelsea are unable to sack their head coach Mauricio Pochettino after their crushing 5-0 defeat to Arsenal on Tuesday.
Pochettino is under massive pressure at Stamford Bridge despite being in the job for less than year amid a horrific first season in charge of the west Londoners.
The Blues sit ninth in the Premier League with six games left and have failed to land any major silverware – in a season which they had somewhat of an advantage over their rivals due to not being in Europe – which gave them extra time to rest.
Chelsea splashed out £434.5m on players at the start of the campaign, which was the most spent by any club during a transfer window in Premier League history.
It took their total spending under BlueCo to over £1 billion after Todd Boehly et al took over from ex-owner Roman Abramovich in May 2022.
While much criticism has been aimed at Pochettino – even more criticism has been directed at the Chelsea hierarchy – and Ferdinand is among those who believes the club’s problems go well beyond their current manager.
?What I would say is that if you have spent a billion pounds on potential then you can?t sack the manager,’ Ferdinand told TNT Sports.
