Michael Owen warns Liverpool FC about signing 26-year-old forward to replace Philippe Coutinho

Michael Owen doesn’t believe Leicester City midfielder Riyad Mahrez would be a good replacement for Philippe Coutinho at Liverpool FC.
The Reds sold Coutinho in a £142m deal to La Liga giants Barcelona at the weekend to end the long-running transfer saga involving the Brazil international.
Jurgen Klopp has a void to fill in his midfield given Coutinho’s impressive return of 12 goals and eight assists in 18 starts in the Champions League and the Premier League this season.
AS Monaco forward Thomas Lemar is one name that has been linked with a potential move to Anfield to replace the 25-year-old playmaker in the January transfer window.
2016 PFA player of the year Mahrez is another player touted with a possible switch to Merseyside given the Algeria international’s obvious talent.
Mahrez is a Premier League winner after the African playmaker scored 19 goals and made 15 assists in their title-winning campaign in the 2015-16 season.
Former Liverpool FC striker Owen doesn’t believe Mahrez has the necessary physicality to shine in Klopp’s team. “Liverpool begin life without Philippe Coutinho in what promises to be one of the games of the season played between the two most exciting sides in the division,” Owen told BetVictor.
“I was asked this week if I thought Riyad Mahrez, who has been linked with a move to Anfield, would be the ideal replacement for Coutinho but I couldn?t agree.
“As good a player as Mahrez is, he might not possess the pace or work ethic that Jurgen Klopp might be looking for and I wonder where he would fit into the starting XI ? certainly not instead of the brilliant Mo Salah on the right side of the front three.”
Liverpool FC signed Virgil van Dijk in a club record £75m deal from Southampton in the January transfer window.
The Reds are in fourth place in the Premier League table and three points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur.
