New Liverpool arrival Virgil van Dijk has admitted he relished the “unfair” boos directed at him from Southampton fans following his first return to St Mary’s.
The Dutch international was the epitome of cool and composure as his side registered a routine 2-0 win over the south-coast side.
Following his acrimonious transfer from St Mary’s in January in a saga that began in the summer ? a pursuit for which Liverpool were reprimanded for by the FA ? Van Dijk was always expecting a hostile reception from the fans of his former club.
But the Dutchman conceded he “enjoyed” the treatment.

Van Dijk wasn’t the only ex-Saint to have featured for Liverpool in Sunday’s victory ? joining the likes of Adam Lallana, Sadio Mane, Dejan Lovren and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as those who used to play for Southampton.
“You just enjoy it. It’s the only thing I think you can do. I think it is a bit unfair because no-one really knows what happened over the summer and the last few months but I just kept my head down and enjoyed it,” Van Dijk said after the game as reported by BBC Sport.
“I think we should have scored more. We deserved the win but we should have made it a bit easier for ourselves.”
