Xabi Alonso has revealed he dreams of managing Liverpool one day.
The former Spain midfielder, who scored 19 goals in over 200 appearances for Liverpool, retired from playing in 2017 and has begun the process of becoming a coach.
Alonso, 36, was asked in a recent interview if he would consider managing the Reds one day.
“Yes for sure, I have dreamt of that, but first I have to prove myself and prepare,” he is quoted by the Liverpool Echo.
“If I decide somewhere along the way to take my chances as a manager, my link, my commitment, my passion with Liverpool is there.
“Why not" We will see if we can cross paths in our ways.”

Even in his last season as a player, Alonso played his part in a Bayern Munich title win. He scored three goals in 27 league appearances, completing 89% of his passes and creating 39 chances. The 36-year old was keen to point out his old teammate Steven Gerrard, who currently coaches the Reds’ U18s team, will manage Liverpool before he gets the chance to.
“I think that Stevie will go earlier than me for sure, it’s the natural way,” he said.
“Steve is already there so it’s going to be sooner rather than later I guess.”
Gerrard and Alonso both scored in the 2005 Champions League final which saw Liverpool come from three goals down to win the competition.
Liverpool host Manchester City in Sunday’s later Premier League fixture.
