Local paper claims Man Utd are watching Tottenham star’s situation

Manchester United are tracking Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld, according to a report.
The Manchester Evening News report that United “are monitoring” Alderweireld’s situation after he was recently left out of Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.
After returning from three months out the Belgian defender declared himself fit to face Arsenal, but the Spurs boss decided not to include him in his party, while the 28-year-old also did not travel to Turin yesterday for Spurs’ Champions League clash with Juventus.
Alderweireld is out of contract in under 18 months and is stalling on signing a new deal with the club. He does have a one year extension, which can be triggered in the summer of 2019, but he also has a 25million release clause which can also be activated in that summer, as long as a deal is wrapped up no mater that 14 days before the end of the window.
The report from the local paper has no other details about the interest, but it goes without saying that Jose Mourinho would be interested in an experienced campaigner like Alderweireld, if he was available. It was understood that Mourinho would focus his summer dealings on his midfield, but the papers this morning claim he is planning a defensive reshuffle with the Daily Mirror suggestingChris Smalling and Phil Jones will be shipped out.
The tabloid claim that Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane and Leicester’s Harry Maguire have been selected as their replacements.
Mourinho has been interested in Tottenham players previously without much success. The Portuguse boss identified Eric Dier as his preferred midfield target in the summer, but Spurs refused to sell, while Danny Rose was also heavily linked with Old Trafford.
