Diogo Jota has dismissed criticism after winning a penalty for Liverpool against Newcastle on New Year’s Day, after Alan Shearer accused him of performing ‘as clear a dive as you will ever see.’
The match finished 4-2 to Liverpool, with Mohamed Salah scoring his second of the game from the penalty spot after Jota won the penalty.
The Portuguese forward went down in the penalty box after being tripped by goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, although it did look odd as Jota took a couple of steps after the contact before going down.
It even seemed like Jota could put the ball in the empty net but instead went down to win the spot-kick.
Shearer wasn’t impressed, posting on social media: ‘F***ing embarrassing.
The Newcastle and England hero added on The Rest Is Football podcast: ‘Yeah, he f***ing dived. Pretty simple. That is as clear a dive you will ever see.
‘There was a tiny bit of contact, but he could have just stayed on his feet and tapped it in.’
