Rewind the clock to 4th March 2023, and City had just won 3-2 away at Millwall, sneaking into sixth spot in the Championship table for the first time in a while.
At the time it felt like a pivotal moment. City seemed to be heading in the right direction after the Millwall win, being unbeaten in five, having won four and also drawn away at Wigan.
They were playoff bound surely, given the welcome uptick in results after a difficult autumn and Christmas period.
Unfortunately, what followed in those next eleven games was anything but playoff form; just one more win, four draws and six defeats as City?s form slumped badly and resulted in a disappointing 13th-placed finish.
Fast-forward a year and, although City find themselves one place lower in the table after 35 games, they have a virtually identical league record – won 16, drawn 7, and lost 12 – but with more goals both scored and conceded compared to last season.
Given what transpired in the spring of 2023, City fans will be hoping everything changes for the better for the remainder of this season.
So, what exactly do City need to do to secure a sixth-placed finish or higher"
That?s almost impossible to answer as comparisons between seasons can be rendered virtually useless, depending on multiple factors, such as future opponents, current form, and fixture sequencing, all coming into the equation, both for City and all the other teams vying for play-off positions.
