Despite missing out on promotion to league champions AFC Wimbledon, Norwich women are laser-focused on finishing this season on a high and are now only one game away from completing a historic unbeaten league season.
It?s just a shame they have nothing to show for it.
Let?s first of all turn our attention to Saturday afternoon. Fans eagerly headed through the turnstiles at Carrow Road to see the Canaries take on Swansea in the Championship in the hope of a win that would have seen them qualify for the Championship play-offs.
As is customary of the final home fixture, the Player of the Season trophies were the first things to be awarded before David Wagner?s men had even kicked a ball.
Although the recipients had been announced before Saturday, the first player up to collect their award was Ellie Smith ? the 2023-24 women?s Player of the Season.
Similar to the men?s POTS, Kenny McLean, you?d be hard-pressed to find a person more deserving of such an honour.
You could argue that Tash Snelling?s goal exploits and the huge saves from Sarah Quantrill could have seen them stake claims to the award, but Smith has undoubtedly been the beating heart of the side.
Goals against Hashtag United and QPR in the Carrow Road fixtures will live long in the memory, and the fact she has managed to reach double figures in both goals and assists shows what a truly special player Smith is.
