Three points against a decent Cov and the playoff charge is on
I’m loathe to get too carried away. Every time I do a blip awaits. Sometimes more than a blip.
It’s been that type of season. Consistency – the very quality needed to sustain a promotion push – has been in short supply and is why, after a decent run of form, we still find ourselves just outside the playoff places.
But – and I didn’t expect to find myself writing this – it is, for the time being, undeniably fun again. Whisper it quietly, but even we old cynics can admit that yesterday afternoon was enjoyable.
That doesn’t mean that everything in the garden is suddenly rosy and all of those horrible off-field concerns have gone away, but it does mean in the here and now, the heat is off David Wagner. Has to be.
Even the football now has a pleasing ebb and flow. At least it did yesterday in much the same way it did against West Brom.
Wagner, it seems, after his very public struggle to find the right balance between free-flowing attack and defensive solidity, has – helped by having most of his big guns available – found a method and shape that provides elements of both without one overly compromising the other.
It’s not perfect and, amid that improved defensive soundness, they still find time for individual errors and mini-implosions but it’s better. Better than it was.
