The Potters finally pulled the trigger last weekend. They sacked manager Mark Hughes after a shock 2-1 FA Cup defeat at Coventry City.
Coventry took the lead midway through the first half through Jordan Willis. Charlie Adam levelled from the penalty spot for Stoke in the 54th minute.
But Jack Grimmer scored the winner for the Sky Blues in the 68th minute.

On Monday, Ladbrokes have seen odds crash on Ostersunds manager Graham Potter getting the Stoke job.
Graham Potter is not that well known in England. However he did recently get a fair amount of attention after the Swedish minnows were paired with Arsenal with knockout phase of the Europa League.

Potter has been in charge of Ostersunds since 2011.
His playing career was rather nomadic. He had stints at Birmingham, Wycombe, Stoke, West Brom, Northampton, Reading, Southampton, York, Boston, Shrewsbury Town and Macclesfield.
The Ostersunds boss spent three years with Stoke as a player and has expressed an interest in the job since Mark Hughes was sent packing last weekend.
And the bookies now make him a 7/1 shot for the position, putting him firmly among the frontrunners ahead of the likes of Ronald Koeman (14/1), Roberto Mancini (16/1) and former second-favourite, Ryan Giggs (20/1).
Martin O’Neill is currently 6/4 to get the job, while Gary Rowett is a 2/1 shot. Aside from that pair, only Slaven Bilic (6/1) is ahead of Potter in the market right now.
