Paul Merson has said that Micky van de Ven is not only one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League but also one of the best in his position across world football.

Van de Ven was a relative unknown to most English football fans when he arrived from Wolfsburg last summer but based on how well he has done at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, many will wonder how more clubs were not in for him.

The 22-year-old has everything that one would want in a modern-day centre-back, being quite composed, strong in duals, aggressive and possessing an extraordinary turn of pace.

It is a testament to the Dutchman’s class that despite his relative lack of experience, he has hardly needed any time to adjust to the pace and intensity of the Premier League, looking right at home in the division from day one.

Merson believes that the Netherlands international is up there with the best central defenders in the game at the moment.
