Uruguayan club fined, fans banned for taunting Chapecoense plane crash

Nacional condemned the behaviour of its fans after receiving a fine and supporter travel ban for “sick” gestures referring to the Chapecoense plane crash in November 2016.
The Uruguayan club was competing against Chapecoense in the first leg of their second-round meeting in the Copa Libertadores in January, and its fans taunted its Brazilian opponent by mocking the tragedy that took the lives of 19 members of its squad. Overall, there were 71 casualties when the plane collided with mountains surrounding Medellin, Colombia.

Nacional was fined $ 80,000 and will not be cheered on by travelling support for its next three continental away matches. “Unfortunately, many sick minds channel their irrationality to sporting scenarios,” Nacional said in a statement, as reported by BBC Sport.
Chapecoense was beaten 2-0 on aggregate over the two legs, ending its run in the competition. When the disaster occurred, the club, which had risen from being a fourth-tier entity in 2009, was en route to the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final against Atletico Nacional. The Colombian side requested that Chapecoense was rewarded with the trophy following the crash.
