Since flopping at West Ham United, Gianluca Scamacca has been trying to prove himself in Italy again.
The Atalanta striker had last scored a goal in January, and even lost his starting place in the team in the last few fixtures of Serie A, due to form and injury problems, making it clear the investment made in him may not have been worth it.
It turns out that on Wednesday evening, Scamacca scored a goal for Atalanta which meant his ‘liberation’ after such a tough period. That’s explained by Calcio Mercato, who highlight the player’s ability to do well when playing in European competitions.
The outlet highlights that after returning to the starting team in the Europa League round-of-16, the striker scored the ‘fundamental’ goal in the 1-1 tie against Sporting in Lisbon, and it’s hoped that can turn things around for the former West Ham player. The data brought by Calcio Mercato says Scamacca is the best Italian striker in European competitions in the past two seasons, and it’s a level which, depending on the next few months, we could even get to the Euro with the Azzurri.
Signed by West Ham in a ?28.5m deal from Sassuolo in 2022, the player had eight goals in 27 appearances for the Hammers. Now he matched that record at Atalanta with a few months left for the end of the season, and it seems this could be the turning point in his career.
