Crystal Palace aiming to beat Leeds to Bundesliga striker to bolster attack

Crystal Palace are reportedly looking at Mainz 05 striker Jean-Phillipe Mateta as a solution to their problems in front of goal.
The Eagles were the second-lowest Premier League scorers in 2019/20. Their attacking woes have continued this campaign, averaging just 1.16 goals per game at the half-way point of the season.
Frontmen Christian Benteke and Jordan Ayew have managed only four goals between them, and Chelsea loanee Michy Batshuayi is yet to score in his second spell in South London.
According to The Independent, former French youth international Mateta is one of the more favoured options on the club?s list of potential targets.
The 23-year-old has netted 10 goals in 17 games in all competitions this season for Bundesliga relegation strugglers Mainz. He joined the German side from Lyon in 2018 and still has two-and-a-half years left on his contract.
As a result, Palace will have to stump up a considerable fee to secure the move. Mainz will no doubt also be looking for a hefty profit on the £7.2million they signed him for.
?A forward who is fit again and has the perfect age is in demand despite the virus,? said Mainz?s sporting director, Rouven Schroder, speaking to Bild.
?[If an outrageous offer comes in] we would then need to sit down and discuss it. We rejected something last winter and in summer, too.?
Leeds also interested in Mateta
If Palace are to sign Mateta, they will also have to beat competition from fellow Premier League side Leeds United.
