Rafa Benitez in talks to take Brazilian job – About as far away from Liverpool and Everton as he could get
Rafa Benitez could soon be far away from his Liverpool home, the Reds, Everton and all the other clubs he’s managed in Europe by taking a job in Brazil, according to claimsfrom the country.
Journalist Gabrie Sá writes on Twitter that São Paulo have opened talks to sign the Spaniard.
It’s said the negotiations kicked off on Sunday, right after consulting agent Giuliano Bertolucci.
The talks with Benitez seem to be going well, with the report claiming the coach ‘likes the project’ and there’s ‘optimism’ about a happy ending.
A new meeting for the former Liverpool and Everton boss is now set to take place in the ‘coming hours’.
São Paulo had been doing great last year, when they won the Brazilian Cup, and ended up losing manager Dorival Junior to the national team. His substitute, Thiago Carpini, is having a disastrous start to the season, and even though he hasn’t been officially sacked yet, it isn’t exactly a shock that they’re already looking for a new manager. Benitez, who managed Liverpool between 2004 and 2019 and Everton between 2021 and 2022, had his last job at Celta Vigo, leaving the Spanish club last month.
A move to South American football would certainly be interesting.
