From Portugal: Manager’s rejection to West Ham could spoil Arsenal’s chase for star
Even though there’s no more panic from the Portuguese media about Ruben Amorim possibly leaving Sporting for West Ham United, his failed move to the Hammers is still getting coverage.
Newspaper O Jogo today features a story claiming that to convince the coach to stay with the Lions for another year, club president Frederico Varandas is set to gather some arguments to put on the table.
One of them is the stay of Arsenal target Viktor Gyokeres, who would keep the squad highly competitive for another season.
The outlet points out that Varandas will use ‘all possible weapons’ to keep the manager, and to ‘sensitise him’, he’ll start with the squad’s hard core.
Gyokeres is the main name, with Arsenal interest mentioned again, especially because the striker’s agent recently said it’s very like he’d leave if Amorim goes. O Jogo claims that the centre-forward draws the interest from Arsenal, and in order to hold him, Varandas will demand the payment of his ?100m release clause to let him go.
Gyokeres has 38 goals and 16 assists in 45 appearances in his first season with Sporting.
Amorim staying makes Gyokeres going less likely, and O Jogo explain that entwines the situations of Arsenal and West Ham.
