Aston Villa Women win Conti-Cup shootout to progress to the semi-finals
Aston Villa women travelled to Crawley to take on Brighton at the Broadfield Stadium last night in the quarter-finals of the Conti-Cup. Villa reached this stage last season and lost out to Arsenal who went on to win the competition, so they were hoping to go at least one step further this year.
Villa were without the injured trio of Dan Turner, Lucy Parker and Lucy Staniforth. Ward was also without the cup-tied trio of Freya Gregory, Noelle Maritz and our latest new signing Miri Taylor. Anna Leat is currently away on International duty with New Zealand and the late announcement that Rachel Daly would be suspended for three games left Villa light in numbers.
Number one goalkeeper Daphne Van Domselaar made her first cup appearance of the season, with the regular back 4 Sarah Mayling, Maz Pacheco, Anna Patten and Rachel Corsie just in front of her. The game started very end to end with both teams having chances at goal but none troubling either goalkeeper and struggling with the final ball into the box. Villa were very attacking and constantly looking to play forward but were struggling to play through the back line with Salmon reluctant to make the runs in behind the defence and not seeming to play like we?re used to seeing her play in recent games.
