Two-faced Atlético remain alive against Inter, but cracks in the façade are evident

Atlético?s catastrophic central defense rotation will continue to limit the team?s ceiling. This could have been worse for Atlético Madrid. In fact, it should have been.
Inter Milan were a cut above Atlético on Tuesday night and fully deserved its 1-0 win at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in the first leg of this Champions League round of 16 tie. The result flattered Los Colchoneros, who were flattened in the second half and were fortunate that substitute Marko Arnautovi? did not score sooner than the 79th minute.

Inter registered 2.34 expected goals ? most of that in the second half, where the Nerazzurri have scored eight of their nine goals in this season?s Champions League ? and held Atlético without a single shot on target. Despite some promising passages of play and a well-organized defense in the first half, Diego Simeone?s men once again demonstrated their inability to perform away from home while ? perhaps miraculously ? walking away with a puncher?s chance to win the tie in the Metropolitano next month.
