Refereeing decisions and missed chances cost the Colchoneros Atlético Madrid suffered another horrible evening in the Champions League on Wednesday as they crashed to a 3-1 defeat at home to a weakened LOSC Lille side.
Julián Álvarez had given Atleti an early lead, pouncing on a defensive error to score, but the team wasted chances and allowed Lille back in as they scored three in the second half, with two deflected goals and a penalty which should never have been.
Here we take a look at some of the takeaways from the game.
There are referees worse than those in Spain
Atleti can feel hard done by to have emerged from this game with a defeat, not least because the goal that gave the French side the lead should never have been. Italian referee Marco Guida, who also refereed the first leg of last season?s quarter-final against Borussia Dortmund, gifted an inexplicable penalty to Lille, seemingly for handball. The replays seemed to show no such offence, rather that it was a Lille player who handled the ball and then fell to the ground with minimal, if any, contact from Koke. Yet the decision stood.
Atlético Madrid absolutely schooled Lille for 90 minutes, and some how lose to two fluke deflections, a rigged penalty! And Oh, a red card that was ignored too!
This is why football is so infuriating and corrupt sometimes?absolute disgrace! pic.twitter.com/RL4DJFRRkQ? Omar Garcia (@_ATM98) October 23, 2024...
