Are Bayern Munich too good" Or is the rest of the Bundesliga not good enough" After a decade of unwavering dominance in the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich finally fell short last season, finishing third behind the unbeaten champions Bayer Leverkusen and unexpected challengers VfB Stuttgart. It seemed almost impossible that Bayern could be beaten?until it happened. It was brilliant to see someone else win the league. Still, it highlights the state of affairs in the Bundesliga that it took an exceptional team going on a season-long heater and significantly overperforming their xG at the same time as Bayern Munich constantly shooting themselves in the foot for someone other than Bayern to walk away as champions. Leverkusen still look like an excellent team this season that will run Bayern right down to the wire, but they are already three points behind Bayern now, and the betting odds strongly favor the Meisterschale returning to Munich this summer. Bayern Munich?s dominance of the Bundesliga is a problem (even despite Leverkusen?s recent success). It has inspired many discussions about what the league needs to do to even things up, including a firmly tongue-in-cheek suggestion by Michael Cox a couple of years ago that Bayern should start every game with a 1-0 deficit.
