When Wout Weghorst joined Ajax from Burnley in the summer, the criticism from the Dutch press went overboard early on.
That was when the Dutchman wasn’t really playing regularly but that changed quite quickly. And now, the narrative around the ex-Manchester United man has also changed.
The striker grabbed a brace against Heracles at the weekend, showcasing his ability in front of goal once again.
The Dutch press is now praising his arrival from Burnley and in a recent column for AD, Sjoerd Mossou talked about Weghorst.
He wrote: ?The striker from Borne is in many ways a gift from heaven. For us as journalists, analysts and columnists, because with Wout it is never boring, on the contrary.?
The journalist also stated that while Weghorst isn’t in the typical Ajax mould like Marco van Basten was, his uncompromising nature is winning them over. ?But above all, Weghorst is of course a gift from heaven for Ajax. An atypical Ajax striker, a kind of anti-Van Basten and an anti-Kluivert, but exactly the uncompromising type that they could use so well in Amsterdam.?
It’s quick justice for Weghorst, after the criticism of his purchase from Burnley turned into outright mockery at one stage. It got so bad that the striker’s mother asked a prominent journalist about the situation, which quickly saw he and others capitulate and stop their targeting of the player.
