Very few things can be said about this third round of the Champions League against Stuttgart that could portray Juventus in a particularly positive light. However, an artful performance by No. 2 goalkeeper Mattia Perin, as starting keeper Michele Di Gregorio serves a one-game suspension, can and should be talked about for many years to come.
The 31-year-old from Latina was forced to play the role of savior numerous times throughout Tuesday?s match, succeeding in salvo after salvo of shots from Stuttgart, totaling 22 overall, with 10 of them on target.
However, Perin?s defining moment came in the form of a penalty save that, for the moment, had fans and team alike believing that a draw was salvageable from this dreadful performance. Perin left his heart and soul on that pitch after such a depressing loss, with his postgame interview showing him distraught in answering questions from the pitch-side interviewer. At the end of the day, not much blame at all can be placed on Perin. He was one of the sole bright spots of the match.
Tim Weah is fast
Echoing earlier sentiments, not much good came from this match. However, American winger Timothy Weah displayed unprecedented speed in attack after he was substituted on in the second half.
