Liverpool director of football Jorg Schmadtke has admitted he was wrong about Dominik Szoboszlai, initially believing he was not worth the fee they were paying for him.
The Liverpool director has been speaking to Zeit Online regarding life at Liverpool and how he was wrong when it came to one of his major summer signings.
Szoboszlai joined Liverpool in a ?70m deal from RB Leipzig in the summer as part of a major midfielder rebuild by the club ahead of this season.
He arrived with a growing reputation following his time at Leipzig, where he had often been the star of the show and managed 20 goals and 22 assists in 91 games, despite injuries often limiting his progression.
He?s been impressive at Liverpool so far, though, establishing himself as a key player under Jurgen Klopp and managing five goals and four assists in 28 games to date. He?s quickly on his way to being the star many have long predicted he would be and value for the money Liverpool spent to get him, something Schmadtke didn?t believe would be the case.
?Now in Liverpool there was someone who cost ?70m, Szoboszlai, who we brought from Leipzig,? he said in a discussion on transfers.
?Then I said: It’s too expensive. From today’s perspective, that was a misjudgment on my part. The boy was an important Liverpool player from day one. He performed better than I would have expected him to.?
