Perhaps even more so than the UK media, the Portuguese media are somewhat obsessed with the prospect of Rúben Amorim taking over at Manchester United.
His moves have been tracked this morning, with him taking his Sporting players through a light training session ahead of tonight’s match against Nacional, and that’s likely to continue until he sets foot on a private jet and heads for England.
Anything mildly relevant which can be dragged up is appearing and that’s seen CNN Portugal do some digging to find Rúben Amorim’s quotes from the last time Manchester United were working to appoint a permanent manager.
The Sporting coach was linked at that point too, although he was far from being the major candidate for the club. Still, the Portuguese media wanted Amorim to comment on the situation. It was November 2021, ahead of Sporting’s Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund, and in response to the questioning… Amorim said he hoped Erik ten Hag would be appointed.
CNN Portugal quote him as saying: “United" We’re talking about rumours, my future is clear. I don’t know how many names have been mentioned, I don’t give it much importance. If you’ll allow me to give my opinion, United should take Ten Hag this week. That would make me very happy.”
Sporting were set to face Ajax later in the Champions League, hence Amorim wanting them to lose their manager.
