The general Albert Gudmundsson theme in the Italian media over the past couple of weeks has been that Inter Milan and Juventus would really like to sign the Genoa player, with Inter seeming particularly keen, but the big bad wolf of Tottenham Hotspur could ruin everything.
The 26-year-old has scored 15 goals and added four assists in 33 matches so far this season, playing as a second striker for Genoa. He’s considered something of a revelation, and perhaps a late developer, who can go on to even greater things.
Obviously, that has encouraged interest as mentioned above and Tottenham being keen means Genoa can push the price higher than normal. For a while that was put at ?35m, although there’s been suggestions this week it could hit ?40m. That’s just too much for Inter Milan or Juventus to pay this summer without big sales, and Friday’s edition of Corriere dello Sport shares Inter’s grand – and incredibly optimistic – plan.
They want to loan the player next season and include an obligation to buy him for around ?35m, however, they don’t want to pay for that loan.
Instead, they would send a young player they don’t want to Genoa, but would also want a buyback clause in case he comes good.
That, if Gudmundsson is wanted as much as the Italian media insist he is, is quite the cheeky approach. Tottenham could obviously crush it easily, and it’s worth again noting they have Djed Spence on loan at Genoa right now.
