Back down to earth with a bump. Atlético Madrid fell to their heaviest defeat to FC Barcelona since 2012 as they were beaten 3-0 at the Estadio Cívitas Metropolitano on Sunday night, bringing Colchoneros back to earth after the jubilant scenes which followed the Champions League victory over Inter Milan earlier in the week.
The home team were never at the races, with returning loanee João Félix scoring against the club for the second time this season just before half-time to break the deadlock. In the second period, Robert Lewandowski extended the lead early on with Fermín López making it three just after the hour mark, an Nahuel Molina was sent off late on to make a bad night even worse. Here are four talking points from the game.
1. So that?s what happens when Atlético rotate
Going the full distance to beat Inter in the Champions League was always going to have consequences, and in this case it was that there were several players who weren?t up to the task of producing the same performance again only a few days later against Barcelona.
Mario Hermoso was injured and replaced by Reinildo Mandava, while Koke was replaced by Pablo Barrios and Rodrigo Riquelme came in for Antoine Griezmann, who continues to nurse an ankle injury. All three changes seemed to be downgrades that weakened the team. The reserves were not good enough to maintain the same level of performance.
