Samu Lino goes from strength to strength as he continues superb debut season at Atlético

The Brazilian had another strong game against Real Betis. It came as quite the surprise when, seemingly out of nowhere, Atlético Madrid scooped up Samuel Dias Lino in the summer of 2022 for a ?6.5 million fee. Lino had starred in the Portuguese league, but not for one its ?Big Three? of Porto, Benfica, or Sporting Clube de Portugal. Instead, he played for Gil Vicente, located in the small city of Barcelos ? deep within the wine country of northern Portugal.
A winger by trade, Lino spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Valencia while his parent club struggled to get consistency out of Yannick Carrasco or anything at all out of Sergio Reguilón on the left flank. Los Che faced relegation from LALIGA for much of the season and finished an unimpressive 16th in the table, but Lino played in all 38 games and scored six goals. Despite rumors of another loan move for the 2023/24 season, Lino returned to Atlético for preseason training ? and he stayed. However, entering the season, Carrasco was still here. Javi Galán, one of LALIGA?s best left-backs over the previous two seasons, had just signed from Celta Vigo. Rodrigo Riquelme was with the team as well, Diego Simeone eager to give him a shot after an impressive loan spell at Girona. You could understand why there had been some talk that Lino could end up at RB Leipzig, or back in the Primeira Liga with Braga.
But by September, Lino could practically step in to Atlético?s...
