Manager makes admission on wanting Tottenham player – Finances too much, reveals alternative who should be watched
Last summer, Tottenham Hotspur bolstered their defence by signing Micky van de Ven from VfL Wolfsburg.
The Netherlands international was previously on Ajax?s radar and this is now revealed by their former manager, Alfred Schreuder. He was in charge of the Eredivisie side in the first half of the 2022/23 season.
Schreuder has been speaking to Voetbal International, relayed by Voetbal Zone, to review his time at Ajax, and revealed that he wanted the current Tottenham player.
In the summer of 2022, the Amsterdam club signed two centre-backs, Calvin Bassey and Ahmetcan Kaplan, and the latter made his first team debut last weekend.
When discussing other options considered by Ajax in that window, Schreuder mentions about Van de Ven and why the deal didn?t take shape. ?Other options were not available to us at the time. For example, we were interested in Micky van de Ven, but he turned out to be too expensive,? he said.
Feyenood’s Thomas Beelen was also on Schreuder’s list and it makes sense to continue to monitor him.
Tottenham reportedly paid ?50m to secure the defender?s services from the Bundesliga side.
Spurs and Ange Postecoglou will be pleased that Ajax missed out on the 22-year-old, who has established himself at the north London club this season. The Dutchman has made 16 Premier League appearances and Tottenham have lost only two of them.
